Cartagena’s inner bay includes the islands of Manzanillo and Manga, where the fortresses of San Sebastián del Pastelillo, San Juan de Manzanillo and Santa Cruz de Castillogrande are still standing.
During the colonial era, the fortresses of the inner bay progressively lost their preponderance in the defensive military strategy of the port, especially compared to the positioning of the fortresses of the outer bay, concentrated in Bocachica.
