It was one of the first sections constructed in the walled city, flanking the Bulwark of Santo Domingo on the left. Begun around 1614 by order of the governor, Diego de Acuña, its plan was designed by the engineer Cristóbal de Roda following the project proposed in 1595 by Bautista Antonelli, also an engineer, to protect the most exposed area of the city, the strip of sand that joined it to Bocagrande.
Between 1714 and 1719, the engineer Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor repaired the wall as well as adding embrasures and, in the corner, a sentry-box. The bulwark maintained its characteristics with the exception of its right flank, destroyed when access was opened from Baloco Street to Santander Avenue.
