The Marina Wall is the name by which the section of the walled city between the Bulwarks of Santa Cruz and Santa Catalina is known. The force of the sea and enemy attacks destroyed it on numerous occasions, making it necessary to undertake continuous reconstruction efforts during more than 150 years.
Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor was the great rebuilder of the walls in this section, and the person who first proposed the construction of an underwater reef to protect the city from the sudden changes in the sea; it would not be until 1765 that Antonio de Arévalo began the work. He improved the system developed by Herrera and the problem was given a definitive solution in 1771.
